For me it’s a name preference due to the constructional and historical differences.
Historically a Witch Ball was created to protect the home and residence from witches, evil spells, the evil eye, curses etc. They are these beautifully crafted, colorful, blown glass Witch Balls, that were originally used as fishing floats. They were hung in windows and on porches to draw the attention of mischievous spirits. They become mesmerized by the ball's reflective beauty and when they touch it become absorbed and trapped in the web-like strands.
As the fear of Witches grew throughout Europe, the Witch Ball evolved to include holy water, rusty nails, nail clippings, salt and even urine. They were then sealed and hidden within walls and chimneys of the home to protect against witches and curses.
In the US those that lived in the Ozarks and Appalachian Mountains had their version of a Witch Ball that was used to curse people with injury or death.
Most modern day Witch Balls are filled with herbs, stones and are made for anyone to protect their home from negative energy. I call mine Protection Orbs instead of Witch Balls to separate them from the original ones as they were usually used out of fear and to curse. They are also made differently and the original glass blown Witch Balls do still exist.
If you are interested in looking at a glass blown Witch Ball check out this website (I don’t get paid, I just like their site, and the historical information they provide)
